Heredotus (known as the father of history) described the Aegean coast as being the most beautiful and having the best climate in the world. This bountiful region accounts for 11% of the total area of Turkey. The shoreline is one of pretty bays and peninsulas, coves and unspoilt beaches. Favourite holiday spots of Marmaris, Bodrum and upcoming Altinkum, popular with Turkish families and increasingly with other visitors, lie along it.
One of the best ways of appreciating the beauty of this coastline is from the deck of a sailing vessel and many boat trips can be found operating out of its marinas and harbours.
Travelling inland, it is also a treasury of fabulous ancient sites including the world-famous and well-preserved ruins at Ephesus; the impressive archaeological remains of Didyma – with its magnificent Temple of Apollo, and ruins at Priene and Miletus. Almost half of all Turkey’s olive trees grow here, and this fertile region thrives on a mix of agriculture, tourism and manufacturing, with leather, carpet weaving, marble and olive oil among the many items produced.
